Acid Reflux Symptoms & The Current Medications
Acid reflux diseases are basically disorders of digestive system. It is characterized by a burning sensation in the chest. Though it is not that alarming, but such persistent complaints may lead to the damage of esophagus & result in related cancer. It is generally treated by diet revision & medication after examining the acid reflux symptoms.
Acid reflux mostly causes burning sensation in the chest being one of the main symptoms. Actually acid reflux takes place when some kind of acid leaks up into the esophagus or gullet. In case of intake of any food, it passes down the esophagus into the stomach. The cells within the lining in the stomach with the help of other chemicals enable the process of digestion. But somehow the lining of esophagus has little protection from acid. Stomach acids cause inflammations in these lining resulting in these complains.
In this case, apart from medicines, acid reflux diet is suggested. The other acid reflux remedies are of course the various courses of medications. As mentioned, one of the main symptoms is the burning feeling originating from the upper abdomen rising up towards the neck via the chest. The other acid reflux symptoms are feeling sick, acidic taste in the mouth, irritating pain while hot drinks are swallowed, like heart burn these symptoms come & go like the heart burn symptoms.
Some uncommon symptoms also occur and in those cases, diagnosis becomes difficult. These are chronic cough particularly at night; sometimes it is clubbed with asthmatic tendencies. For examining the symptoms endoscopy is the most common test. Here a thin telescope is passed in to the esophagus to the stomach.
Apart from medicines, change in lifestyle & resorting to acid reflux diet both are helpful. In case of medications, use of antacids plays a major role. These are alkali liquids or tablets those deactivate the acid. It provides fast relief. There are many brands one can choose from; in case of heart burn symptoms these can be used. If the gerd symptoms occur frequently, then a doctor has to be consulted.
Generally, in this case the doctor advises acid suppressing medicines. Two groups of such medicine are available, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) & histamine receptor blocker (H2Blockers). They work in separate ways, but both reduce the level of acid that stomach produces.
These acid reflux remedies as suggested in the form of PPIs are quite effective. PPIs basically contain omeprazole, lansoprazole, etc. while H2 Blockers includes cimetidine, famotidine etc. Initially the proton pump inhibitors work better than the later one. A formal prescription says intake of PPI medicines for one month usually settles the gerd symptoms down & allows any inflammation in the esophagus to clear off.
After that one has to take antacids or a brief course of acid suppressing medication for any remaining acid reflux symptoms. But in case of acute cases, sometimes long time medication is required. Sometimes prokinetic drugs (like domperidone) are used to accelerate the passage of food in the stomach. But it is not a common use. Sometimes a surgery tightens the lower esophagus to prevent acid leaking. So there is a definite process of acid reflux medications.
